How Do I Know If I’m a Candidate for LASIK?

Are you nearsighted or farsighted? Do you have astigmatism?

Are you tired of needing corrective lenses to see clearly?

If you answered “yes” to the above questions, consider laser vision correction! LASIK is one of the most commonly performed elective surgeries because it is quick, safe and produces excellent results.

LASIK surgery is not for everyone. The best way to determine whether you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation with a reputable LASIK surgeon, like Dr. Brian Will at Will Vision & Laser Centers.

Dr. Will will look at several different criteria, including the following:

Age

You should be at least 18 years of age. There is not an upper age limit for LASIK, but it is important to note that presbyopia (age-related near-vision deterioration), which sets in sometime after the age of 40, is inevitable and will need to be treated separately.

Stable Vision Prescription

Before undergoing LASIK, your vision prescription should be stable for at least a year, with no significant changes. Nearsightedness is the condition most likely to become worse, but other changes in vision prescription are possible, too.

If your prescription is very high, LASIK may not be your best option. Alternative treatments can be explored.

Eye Health

Your eyes should be in good health. If you have a chronic condition such as persistent dry eye, cataracts or uncontrolled glaucoma, LASIK is not a good idea. If you have an active eye infection, you need to wait until it has improved before undergoing LASIK.

General Health

Your general health status is also a serious consideration. If you have an active autoimmune disorder, uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension or thyroid problems, or have used steroids for a significant period of time, you may not be a good candidate for LASIK.

Corneal Thickness

LASIK involves making a flap in the surface layer of your corneal tissue. In order for surgery to be successful, your corneas need to be of a certain thickness. We will use sophisticated technology to measure the thickness of your corneas and determine whether you are suitable for LASIK surgery.

Thorough Understanding of the Procedure

The best LASIK candidates have a comprehensive understanding of the procedure, including what it entails, the benefits and the possible complications. These points will be discussed with you during consultation, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you have. We also encourage you to use our website as a resource as you research the LASIK procedure.
