The Most Common Misconceptions About LASIK

Imagine life with clearer vision.  Many people choose LASIK surgery to correct vision problems, often eliminating the need for glasses or contacts. LASIK is popular, but often misunderstood. Today, let’s clear up some common misconceptions about LASIK so you can decide if this procedure is really right for you.

LASIK Misconception #1: I’m Not a Good Candidate for LASIK

Many of our patients have been told elsewhere that they aren’t a candidate for LASIK. With the many advances in vision correction over the last few years, most everyone can enjoy freedom from glasses, contacts, and reading glasses. We use some of the most advanced technology available and can treat very high degrees of astigmatism as well as extensive near or farsightedness. If you use corrective lenses, we can likely help you. Come see us to explore your options, even if you’ve been told you’re not a good candidate by a different LASIK provider.

LASIK Misconception #2: LASIK Requires a Long Recovery Period

You’re busy, but not too busy for LASIK. Most patients are able to return to their regular activities in just a day or two. You can exercise immediately, even strenuously, but use protective eyewear if you’ll be playing a team sport (like basketball or soccer) where you may be poked in the eye. Avoid swimming and hot tubs for a couple of weeks. You’ll be surprised how quickly you’re back to life after LASIK, and even better, you’ll be enjoying life without the hassle of glasses and contacts.

LASIK Misconception #3: LASIK Is Painful

With modern anesthetic protocols, LASIK is practically painless. You may feel some pressure as we create the LASIK flap. Some patients describe the sensation as similar to a blood pressure cuff, but on the eye. Depending on the technique used, this pressure will only last for about 20 seconds. After the procedure, we’ll place drops in the eyes and provide you with pain medication and a sedative to help you rest. Most patients fall asleep quickly and report no pain. If you don’t fall asleep, you may feel a mild to moderate burning in the eyes, lasting about three hours.

LASIK Misconception #4: All LASIK Providers Are the Same

If you’re thinking about LASIK, choose your provider carefully. LASIK is a surgical procedure and comes with some real risks. An experienced provider can significantly reduce the potential for complications and achieve consistently better results. Dr. Will has performed over 65,000 refractive procedures and is a recognized world authority in the field of refractive surgery. We have pioneered every leading technology currently used in the Pacific Northwest including Bladeless LASIK.
